Fireplace Cooking and heating fires within buildings started in open atriums in pots or braziers. Theside wall fireplace replaced the brazier in the thirteenth century and chimneys with flues were added. As a focal point of a room, they became more ornate over time. The latin word for fireplace is focus. |
